UgVacSafe

The solution empowers vaccine recipients to report share their experience following immunization (AEFI). It supplements the passive surveillance systems by actively following up vaccine recipients using SMS. The emphasis is currently on COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring.

COVID-19 vaccine safety surveillance

The COVID-19 vaccine was rolled out on 10 March 2021 in Uganda, and VxMedSS is conducting active vaccine safety surveillance of the AstraZeneca vaccine in Iganga Eastern Uganda as sentinel surveillance. 

The UgVacsafe system is a Vaccine monitoring System based on responses completed using a specially designed USSD code. The code is sent to vaccine recipients by SMS a day after receiving the vaccine. The system works with phones of all types (smartphone or not). 

The COVID-19 Vaccine AEFIs reports are from a sentinel surveillance system. Preliminary outputs include AEFI responses completed after 14 Mar 2021.
